Drip and sprinkler systems irrigate landscapes and gardens but in different ways. Both have their pros and cons. A drip irrigation system is an alternative to sprinklers for watering your lawn. It is considered to be 70% more effective because it uses less water which eliminates waste and keeps your water bill low. Drip lines are buried underneath the grass where the roots are to give your lawn, flowerbeds, or garden the water it needs, where it needs. A drip irrigation system keeps your lawn disease, pest, and weed free. A properly installed drip irrigation system lasts about 10-15 years or longer and works well in clay, different types of soil, and sloped or odd-shaped lawns

So, how do you install a drip irrigation system and how does it work?
The first step in installing an irrigation system is removing the landscape. Next, the soil is prepared and flattened. Then, pipes and drip lines are installed. After that, the system is turned on to ensure the wetting pattern is providing full coverage. Finally, the system is covered with sod. The irrigation system prevents clogging and promotes even watering across the surface area. A filter keeps debris from getting into the drip lines. There is a water pressure regulator to make sure everything is running smoothly. Maintenance is only needed a few times a year and is done by using the manual flush valve to clean out the system.
What about a sprinkler system?
Whereas a sprinkler system is made up of a controller, pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and a backflow preventer. Your mainline of water branches off to either your residence or irrigation system. Water flows through your pipes to the valves. The controller has a timer for when you’d like your valves to open or close or in layman’s terms, for when you’d like your sprinklers to go on or off. Each valve is responsible for a group of sprinklers in a specific zone. When the timer goes, it sends a signal to a valve to open and release the flow of water. The water flows through the pipes to the sprinkler head. The sprinkler head is activated by the water pressure and starts watering. At the end of the runtime, the controller sends a signal to the valve to shut off. The water stops flowing, the water pressure weakens, and the sprinkler deactivates. Keep in mind that there are different types of sprinkler systems such as:
- Pop-up sprinklers: hidden in the ground until activated.
- Shrub sprinklers: elevated sprinklers used to water at or above plant level
- Rotary sprinklers: water on rotation for areas over fifteen feet in width
- Spray sprinklers: set water patterns for smaller areas
